Charge modes explained

Charging an electric car can be done at home, a place of work, or by using 'destination' chargers enroute. Each option typically gives different charge times and costs.

These options are termed 'charging modes' and are split in to 4 categories indicating the type of charger being used and its power output:

Home charging: Workplace charging:
Mode 2 (AC single-phase supply)
2.3kW max from a domestic 3-pin socket using a cable with an inbuilt protection device and power control that emulates basic Mode 3 charger signals.
Typical charge times for a 60kW battery = 26 hours+
Mode 3 (AC three-phase supply)
Up-to 22kW - Limited to three-phase power supplies only (charging at work, or commercial premises. Very few homes are specified with 3 Phase power, tethered or socketed connections with smart control and protection.
Typical charge times for a 60kW battery = 3 hours approx
Mode 3 (AC single phase supply)
7.4kW - a typical dedicated home charging point (like those available from Sync Energy), tethered or untethered with smart control and protection.
Typical charge times for a 60kW battery = 8 hours approx
Destination charging:
Mode 4 (DC current)
22kW-250kW+ - Typically rapid and super-rapid destination chargers, found at motorway services, supermarkets, shopping malls.
Typical charge times for a 60kW battery = < 60 minutes for super-rapid chargers

Which cable do I need to purchase – Mode 2 or Mode 3?

Mode 2 Mode 3
  • Offers EV charging from a standard domestic 3-pin UK socket
    • Max charge 2.3kW
  • Mode 2 cables are slow at charging electric vehicles and do not offer the same safety or Smart capabilities as Mode 3 chargers
  • Ideal as a backup charger when visiting friends and relatives, and if you don’t have a Mode 3 charger at home
  • Often referred to as Granny Chargers/Cables
  • 13A plug-to-Type 2 connection into an electric vehicle
  • Sync Energy advise to ideally connect via a 13A socket designed and marked ‘Suitable for EV charging’
  • Mode 3 cables are required to use a Socketed Mode 3 wall charger (“tethered” chargers have their own inbuilt cable)
  • Max charge 7.4kW (single phase AC – found in most UK homes)
  • Max charge 22kW (3 Phase AC – found in workplace chargers or at high-end bespoke build UK homes when specified)
  • No charging capability by themselves, they must be connected to an EV charger
  • Has Type 2 plugs to connect to an EV and EV charger

Cable care and charging safety

  • The cable and connectors should be kept out of puddles, but can be kept outside (with the connector caps correctly attached).
  • Please remember to use the rubber dust caps to keep debris from collecting in the connectors when not in use.
  • Moisture is the most common issue experienced and will lead to corrosion of the pins which are not covered by our warranty.

What are the risks of charging in the rain?

Care should be taken to not allow water to enter the EV charging socket, car charging socket or charging cable plugs. Water can get in to the plug and charging socket during the insertion and removal of the plug from the car. As soon as the charge port is opened, or unplugging your car from a charger, the rain can get on to the pins and stay there until the next time you charge.

Please note: This EV cable is NOT an extension cable.
